“Last night a DJ saved my life…”
I’ve always loved DJing. From 1991-1997 I did a weekly techno radio show with live beatmixing. When I heard about DJ Hero, I knew I had to get it. It does not disappoint. The turntable controller is mostly well built. I’m a bit disappointed with the center notch on the crossfader. I have a tendency to overshoot when I bring both tracks back in, but that’s something I’ll get used to I’m sure. I also like that you can unlock the tracks using easier difficulty settings, then turn the heat up once they’re all available.

It’s out. Installed, and joined the Creator’s Club. Compiled and played a few games. This is pretty awesome stuff. I can’t wait to get on writing something, I was thinking about maybe Dice Wars.

As per Kotaku, Sega is releasing the open beta for PSO this weekend, which will end on the 18th. WTF? With XBL down on the 17th, that gives people, what, 3 days? That’s not a beta, that’s a marketing campaign. Plus they want 10 bucks a month for the retail product over and above purchase cost. Uh, no thanks. I have enough gaming services to pay for. (WoW, Eve, XBL)

So I picked up the Xbox Live Vision Camera today, and seeing as how it’s just USB, I plugged it into my laptop to see what would happen. It works! Interestingly enough, a second USB device shows up: “Microsoft Xbox 360 Live Vision Security Method 3″. It doesn’t install any actual driver files, but it definitely recognizes it and goes through a long brouhaha getting it up and running. If you plug it in, let it connect to windows update and everything should work out eventually.

Meant to post this earlier (a LOT earlier), but the next XBLA release, Texas Hold ‘em Poker, will be free for the first 48 hours of release. Hopefully it’s a small download because I suspect the servers will be hammered.

As noted at Xboxic, 1UP says Capcom has acknowledged the font problems in Dead Rising. If you haven’t played it, on SD televisions (like mine) the font is super small. I have a 32″ television and for the most part I have to stand in front of the TV to easily read the text. It doesn’t make the game unplayable, but it’s annoying to have to get up from the couch periodically to see what the heck is going on.

Microsoft’s announced a new product and service geared towards encouraging homebrew development of games on the PC and 360. A variant on Visual Studio C# Express 2005, XNA Game Studio Express comes bundled with all the libraries and whatnot necessary to develop games that will run on either Windows or the Xbox 360. Next spring a Pro version will be released that will allow hobbyists to sell their work commercially. Hopefully this attempt at running managed code on a console will work slightly better than their last attempt, with the Sega Dreamcast. That console could deploy either native code, or Windows CE binaries.

Picked it up this morning at Fry’s, a veritable steal at $49.99.
This pricing on 360 games sucks. At least Table Tennis was a decent price. I won’t get a chance to play it until tonight, but I expect it will be glorious, based on the demo. Look out, zombies! Parking cones will be on your head before you know it!

So my son is 5 weeks old now, and I find my gaming style has changed dramatically. Mostly I find myself playing Xbox 360. You can get some pseudo-idea of my progress here. Since 90% of the time I’m holding him, or he’s close by, quick, self-contained games like Robotron:2084, Crystal Quest and Geometry Wars are the general rule. When I have a little more time, (i.e. he’s sleeping) I can throw down some Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires or Table Tennis. Unfortunately it’s hard for me to get involved on Xbox Live because if he starts crying I pretty much have to stop what I’m doing to take care of him, which isn’t fair for my opponents. I haven’t had much time for WoW, mainly because I just can’t play long enough in one sitting to feel like I can accomplish anything. This is pretty sad, actually, because this is the reason I stopped playing FFXI (notice I say stopped playing, not cancelled
) in favor of WoW. On a lighter note, SFII Hyperfighting themes and gamerpictures have been released, which means the game cannot be far behind. Getting Midway on the XBLA bandwagon early is definitely paying off. Now to get Sega to release some of their old titles on XBLA, or maybe Konami or somesuch.
